Synopsis

Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria was only 16 when her cousin Francis Joseph came to visit her eldest sister with a view to arranging a marriage. The 23 year old Austrian Emperor fell in love with the fine featured, long limbed, dark haired beauty Elizabeth instead, married her and loved her until her death in 1898 when she was assassinated by the Italian anarchist Luccheni. Elizabeth, though, was a 'modern' woman at a time when that notion was unheard of. Her love for sport, gymnastics, dangerous riding, sailing, poetry and all things Greek were not catered for by Habsburg family life. Her fairy tale romance went disastrously wrong quite rapidly and she fled from her husband and their four children and the confines of her duties as an Empress. For 35 years she went from one spa to the next; suffered the loss of her son Rudolph (who was found dead at Mayerling next to the body of his mistress) and suffered bouts of ill health. But her restless search for freedom became as legendary as her beauty. In this celebrated biography, Joan Haslip provides the answer to the enigma of Elizabeth's flight from reality.

Interesting, well-researched work on the Empress of Austria. Portrayed her, I believe accurately, as a woman of some intellect; her love of Hungary, her obsession with being away from her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph (who deeply loved her) and the neglect of her duties as Empress of Austria, and her propensity for lavish spending. The author also writes about Elizabeth's charm, generosity and kindness when it suited her. She loved horses and rode them beautifully, excelling in equestrian events.. The author also honestly tells about Elisabeth's willfulness, selfishness, obsession with her beauty, her lack of deep concern for her daughter, HSH Archduchess Gisele, and for her son, Crown Prince Rudolph by being continually away for long periods of time during the critical times of their lives. From the book, one can discern that she imposed this loneliness on herself. It certainly portrays her mental instability after the events at Mayerling and the overwhelming guilt and grief she had about Rudolph's death.

It’s ok but not really for an American reader. I have a hard time reading a lot of the sentence because it was broken English. Unless your are a history teacher it will be hard to follow all of german and Austrian monarchs and the French and German words. Not really impressed

Extremely well written, historically accurate, balanced and fair

Good

The author may know her subject well, but she repeats and repeats herself. How many times do readers have to read that Elizabeth was beautiful, that her husband loved her, that she may have had affairs, etc. Perhaps if the author had not been so redundant I might have enjoyed the book. It certainly would have cut down the number of pages—or is she paid according to the number of words produced?
